What does it mean to be a mother and an artist?
The Mom/Artist Notebook pt.I is a photographic and collaborative project by Herlinde Raeman, focusing on artists who are also mothers.
The project begins with a reflection on time: the time needed for artistic work and the time devoted to motherhood. Raeman invites other artists (Meg Remy (U.S.Girls), Jennifer Hazel, Lulu Hazel Turnbull), who are mothers themselves, to share their experiences through a notebook with questions.Their reflections are brought into dialogue with Raeman’s photographs, which bear witness to the repetition of everyday life with children.
The book is built through multiple voices, revealing different ways of bringing motherhood and artistic practice together. Care for others is understood as a creative act in its own right, one that can nurture and accompany an artistic practice.
